What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution based on Debian and composed most of free and open source software.

Ubuntu is officially released in three editions.

Besides dominating the Desktop consumers market, the Ubuntu also got a huge market share in Server operating systems. Ubuntu Server is supported by all famous application software such as Oracle, Docker, Kubernetes, NextCloud, etc.

Ubuntu 20.04 System Requirements

Download Ubuntu Server 20.04

Currently, Ubuntu Server 20.04.2 LTS ISO is available for free download at Ubuntu official website.

Download Ubuntu Server

You can also download a preinstalled Ubuntu VM. But we are downloading the Ubuntu Server operating system to demonstrate the manual installation.

We have provisioned a Virtual Machine for Ubuntu Server installation with following specifications.

Ubuntu Server Installation 20.04 LTS

Attach the Ubuntu Server ISO file and Start the VM guest.

After successful startup, the Ubuntu installer will ask you to select the preferred language for your Ubuntu operating system.

Ubuntu 20.04 – Language Selection

Choose your preferred language and press <ENTER>.

Ubuntu 20.04 – Keyboard Configuration

Now, the Ubuntu installer is asking for your Keyboard layout. You can detect the layout of your Keyboard by using the ‘Identify keyboard’ option.

Press ‘Done’ after selecting the Keyboard Layout.

Ubuntu Network Connections

Since, we are installing on a Virtual Machine, therefore the Ubuntu installer has detected the DHCP configurations automatically. However, you can provide your customized network configurations here.

From this same screen, you can also create network bonds, if you have connected more than one network interface in your virtual machine.

Press ‘Done’ after finishing your network configuration.

Ubuntu Installation – Configure Proxy

You have to provide a Proxy address, if your system uses a Network proxy server to access the Internet. Otherwise, leave the proxy address blank and press ‘Done’.

Configure Ubuntu Archive Mirror

If you are using an alternate archive mirror for your Ubuntu server, you can set it here. Otherwise, press ‘Done’ to continue with the default archive mirror.

Ubuntu – Guided Storage Configuration

You are configure the storage options from here. You can either choose the guided layout, that will create the default disk layout. Or you can configure your own disk layout.

Press ‘Done’.

Check the final disk layout. If you are happy with that, then press ‘Done’ to implement it.

Ubuntu Storage Configuration – Confirm Changes

The Ubuntu installer is asking for a confirmation. Press ‘Continue’ to apply the disk layout.

Ubuntu User Profile Setup

From this screen, you can create a user profile for your Ubuntu server. This user has the sudo privileges and it can log on to your Ubuntu server.

Provide the required information and press ‘Done’ to continue.

Ubuntu SSH Setup

If you want to access your server remotely (definitely you are), then you can select and install OpenSSH server now.

Press ‘Done’ to continue.

Ubuntu – Featured Server Snaps

The Ubuntu installer is now showing the featured server snaps, that you can install on your Ubuntu server.

No worries, you can install them later anytime. Therefore, Press ‘Done’ to move on with the Ubuntu server installation.

Ubuntu 20.04 – Installing System

Ubuntu server installation has been started.

The installation process take a while to continue, it also downloads updated security patches for your Ubuntu server.

Ubuntu Install Completed

After completion of installation process. Press ‘Reboot Now’ to restart your machine.

After reboot, you may reach at the CLI login prompt.

Login as the new user, that you have created during Ubuntu server installation.

Ubuntu Command Line

You have successfully login to the Linux server and reached at the Bash prompt.
